For the past eight years, I’ve worked in the transportation industry, particularly working with freight brokers and truckload carriers to provide the latest and greatest technology, creating efficiencies in their businesses. I’ve met some phenomenal people and have come to truly love this industry, in spite of and sometimes because of it’s volatility. Although factors are often changing within the industry, the overall strength and consistency has provided many of us with a great career
I started my career at DAT Solutions back in 2012 as an inside sales rep, and I have made a few stops along the way, namely at MyFreightWorld, Port TMS, and now at Trucker Tools. In that time I’ve seen a lot of changes, from market volatility to economic conditions, but nothing like what I’ve seen in the past 12 months. It’s remarkable how much capital has been and continues to be infused into the transportation industry, creating even greater efficiencies in the work flow of freight brokers, carriers and shippers. It’s like Silicon Valley and the core group of venture capitalists in the world suddenly realized the potential within the transportation sector and decided to jump in.
This infusion can be seen in multiple ways, primarily between investments in and acquisitions of tech companies within the space, and it has created a buzz among the industry and a chaos of options for freight brokers, my primary customers, to sort through. Considering that the majority of freight brokers have between 5-15 employees – including the owner – finding time to evaluate, select and implement new technology often becomes a daunting task. I’ve seen many small brokerages of similar size often put off this process in favor of keeping the lights on. Ironically, without the new technology, many of these brokerages won’t be able to keep up and eventually won’t be in business anymore. It’s a choice to sacrifice a little bit today in order to enjoy continued success tomorrow.
This transformation from technology is true personally as well, as technology allows us to be so much more efficient in our daily lives. I literally have no idea how I would function without my calendar on my phone, reminding me of the tasks in front of me. I’m sure I would figure it out, but technology has made it so much easier to figure out. From online banking & automated payments to text and video communication & meetings, the opportunity to be productive has never been greater. However, like anything else, we as humans have the potential to take something meant for good and abuse it into a negative in our lives.
I have personally noticed that it’s much harder to “shut it down”, as they say, or to focus on what is right in front of me. I find myself getting distracted by all the noise that now exists due to technology, often ignoring those right in front of me, my family and friends. So it’s not enough to simply evaluate, select and implement these new technologies. It’s also important to constantly monitor their usage and make adjustments in order to keep them as a positive influence in our lives.
And most importantly, we must come to the realization that we cannot ignore these technologies, either personally or professionally. They are here, our competition is using them, our kids are growing up with them, and it is our responsibility to utilize these resources to the best of our ability in order to positively impact our relationships, our work and our lives.
The technology revolution is here. Are you ready for it?
